Netflix has disabled the option to cast shows from smartphones to most modern TV-streaming devices, a move that has left many users frustrated.
The update, rolled out quietly in November, affects new Chromecast and Google TV hardware.
Netflix blocks casting on newer devices
Netflix updated its support page stating that “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices.”
Users must now rely on the remote that comes with their TV or streaming device to navigate the platform.
The change was first noticed on Reddit, with Android Authority later verifying Netflix’s comments. Many subscribers expressed confusion over the sudden shift.
Reddit users reported that customer support staff attributed the decision to “improving customer experience.” One user said support told them: “If the device has its own remote, you can’t cast.”
The update signals Netflix’s intent to standardise its user experience across devices by prioritizing its native app interface.
What devices are affected?
Users with modern Chromecast devices or Google TV Streamers can no longer cast Netflix via their phones or tablets. If you’ve updated your app in the past two weeks, the feature has likely disappeared.
Casting still works on older Google Cast-compatible devices like the original Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra. These devices rely on smartphones for streaming, as they cannot run the Netflix app natively — which explains their exemption.
Restrictions based on subscription plans
Even if you own an older Chromecast, casting remains unavailable on Netflix’s ad-supported plan.
The rule was introduced earlier in 2025 across all casting devices and still applies today. Subscribers need a higher-tier plan to keep using the feature.
Netflix has published troubleshooting steps for legacy Google Cast devices, indicating the company intends to maintain support for them.
However, users with modern hardware have little choice but to switch to remote-based navigation.
