Mumbai is grappling with one of its worst spells of monsoon rainfall, with deadly incidents, severe flooding, and major disruptions affecting daily life.
Authorities have issued a red alert as more heavy rain is forecast for the city and several other parts of India.
At least six people, including five children and one woman, were killed after two to three multi-storey houses collapsed in the Mankhurd slum area in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai on Sunday, according to civic authorities.
The tragedy is the latest in a series of rain-related incidents that have battered India's financial capital during the ongoing monsoon season.
Heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread destruction across Mumbai over the past several days.
According to local media, trees uprooted by strong winds have fallen onto roads and vehicles, damaging several cars. The tree collapse incidents have claimed at least three lives since late last month, bringing the overall death toll from various rain-related accidents to at least three in separate incidents, while the latest building collapse alone claimed six more lives.
Record rainfall batters Mumbai
Indian media reported that Mumbai has received more than 588 millimetres of rainfall over the past four days, overwhelming drainage systems and flooding several parts of the city.
The city recorded more than 100 millimetres of rainfall, while some areas received as much as 161 millimetres (6.3 inches) during the latest spell of heavy rain.
Landslides and transport services disrupted
Persistent rainfall also triggered landslides on the expressway connecting Mumbai with Pune, forcing authorities to shut the highway and disrupting traffic between the two major cities.
Television footage showed piles of collapsed concrete scattered across roads, while rainwater poured from the roof of a tunnel.
Air travel has also been affected, with several flights cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Long-distance train services, including those operating between Mumbai and Pune, were also cancelled.
Flooded streets and waterlogged neighbourhoods have disrupted normal life across Mumbai.
Local media showed residents wading through flooded lanes as authorities ordered schools and colleges to remain closed on Monday. According to reports, schools in Mumbai have been shut for five days due to the continuing heavy rainfall.
Red alert issued as more rain expected
India's Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning residents of additional heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The weather office has also forecast "a spell of very light to light" rain across many parts of the National Capital Region on Monday.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has been predicted across 17 Indian states today and tomorrow, raising concerns over further flooding, landslides, and transport disruptions.
