The Lahore High Court dismissed a unique petition as non-maintainable wherein a citizen sought permission to consume poison, pleading that he will be alright.
Sarwar Taj, a resident of Mozang area of Lahore, filed a unique petition in the Lahore High Court that he wants to consume poison while reciting Quranic verses at Mochi Gate and that nothing will happen to him.
He sought the court’s permission for carrying out this experiment.
During the hearing, Justice Raheel Kamran asked the petitioner why he wanted to drink poison.
The citizen told the court that he had knowledge that nothing will happen to him after he consumes poison. The court remarked that suicide was haram in Islam and asked how the court could allow a haram act.
“You are playing a stunt for cheap fame,” the court remarked.
The citizen maintained that he did not want any fame, adding that he had faith in God that nothing will happen to him. He insisted on being allowed to consume poison.
The court remarked that cancer patients in India approached the Supreme Court to facilitate their death. There are decisions of the Indian Supreme Court regarding those who ask for facilitated suicide.
The court remarked that they could not allow any illegal act. “If you really want, go ahead, but then action will be taken against you according to the law.”
The court dismissed the application as non-maintainable.
