The National Assembly Standing Committee on Energy has directed K-Electric to install a prepaid metering system on the pattern of South Africa.
The committee also recommended that electricity connections be provided against national identity cards instead of property ownership. The committee put forward key proposals to curb power theft, reduce losses and improve recovery in Karachi. It recommended the installation of a South Africa-style prepaid metering system to strengthen bill recovery.
K-Electric officials informed the committee that the services of the Rangers have been obtained in Karachi to curb electricity theft, reduce losses and improve recovery.
The committee had also recommended assistance from the Federal Investigation Agency and the Rangers to prevent theft. It was stated in writing that eleven FIRs have been registered with the help of the FIA.
The amended Criminal Procedure Code 2023 was described as the biggest hurdle in effective action.
The document further stated that the committee directed K-Electric to ensure recovery of outstanding dues from the provincial government. It was also stated that if bills are to be collected from consumers, uninterrupted electricity supply must be ensured at one hundred per cent.
The committee further directed that elected public representatives be consulted on the issue of load-shedding.
