Zimbabwe have qualified for the Super 8 stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 from Group B after their match against Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.
Following Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe progressed to the next round after the 32nd fixture of the tournament was called off, a result which ended Australia and Ireland’s hopes of reaching the Super 8.
It marks the first time since the 2009 edition that Australia have fallen at the first hurdle of a T20 World Cup. The 2021 champions were unable to advance beyond the group stage.
Despite persistent rain, Zimbabwe supporters gathered in large numbers and continued their celebrations inside the ground. The gloomy weather failed to dampen their spirits. Ireland’s players, walking down the steps, applauded their supporters for attending and remaining in the stands.
Captain Sikandar Raza later appeared on the balcony wearing a broad smile, reflecting the joy among Zimbabwe’s fans and his side’s progression to the Super 8. Zimbabwe will now face India, South Africa and the West Indies in the next phase.
The entire squad joined their supporters in singing and dancing, marking a remarkable turnaround for a side that did not feature in the 2024 edition. Zimbabwe now stand among formidable company and have earned their place in the latter stages of the tournament.
