Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the responsible and peaceful use of nuclear technology.
The high-level meeting highlighted Pakistan’s growing role in nuclear safety, technical cooperation and global capacity-building initiatives.
The meeting took place at the Vienna International Centre and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and the IAEA in multiple areas of peaceful nuclear applications.
Pakistan’s strong partnership with IAEA
Prime Minister Sharif appreciated the strong and longstanding partnership between Pakistan and the IAEA. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the agency’s role in promoting the responsible use of nuclear technology in areas such as cancer diagnosis and treatment, agriculture, nuclear power generation and industrial applications.

The prime minister noted that Pakistan is not only benefiting from the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Programme but is also contributing to the agency’s work by providing experts and conducting international training programs for other member states.
Pakistan’s expertise acknowledged
Rafael Grossi acknowledged Pakistan’s extensive experience and expertise in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. He praised the high quality of Pakistan’s engineers, scientists and technicians, and appreciated the country’s cooperation in the areas of nuclear safety and security.
Grossi stated that Pakistan is well positioned to assist other IAEA member states in the peaceful applications of nuclear technology.
Upcoming Nuclear Energy Summit
The IAEA chief expressed his expectation of Pakistan’s active participation in the Nuclear Energy Summit to be hosted by France in March.
The summit is expected to bring together global stakeholders to discuss the future of nuclear energy and its role in sustainable development.
Agreement signed to enhance cooperation
During the visit, Foreign Minister Dar and Director General Grossi signed an agreement designating Pakistan as a center of cooperation.
The agreement marks another step forward in strengthening Pakistan’s collaboration with the IAEA and expanding its role in international nuclear cooperation frameworks.
The meeting underscored Pakistan’s commitment to advancing safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technology while contributing to global knowledge-sharing and development.
