Pathum Nissanka scored the first century of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as Sri Lanka defeated Australia by eight wickets on Monday.
The victory ensured Sri Lanka’s progression to the Super 8 stage and left Australia on the verge of elimination from the group stage.
The chase marked Sri Lanka’s highest successful run chase on home soil. Nissanka remained unbeaten on 100 from 52 deliveries, striking ten fours and five sixes. Kusal Mendis supported with 51 runs off 38 balls, while Pavan Rathnayake contributed 28 not out.

Australia posted 181 runs in their 20 overs. Mitchell Marsh scored 54, Travis Head made 56, and Josh Inglis contributed 27. Dushan Hemantha was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets.
Sri Lanka reached 184 for 2 in 18 overs, with Nissanka and Mendis guiding the chase. Extras added four runs. The match took place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, where Sri Lanka elected to field first.
