A student of the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland has created what is believed to be the world’s largest socks monkey, using nearly 200 feet of corduroy fabric.
22-year-old Emilia Evans-Munton said the project began as a personal piece for her degree show. She later realised it could also qualify as the largest socks monkey ever made.
She said her father advised her to have the feat registered with Guinness World Records.
The giant toy, measuring 49 feet and 6 inches in length, was stuffed with 40 bales of straw. Emilia Evans-Munton said much of her artistic thinking centres on “scale”, so that adults standing before the vast figure feel small and rediscover a sense of childhood wonder.
For the monkey’s eyes, she used large buttons made from recycled wood, each measuring 1.5 metres, or five feet, in diameter.
The unusual creation went on public display at the Field Maneuvers Festival in Norfolk, England, where visitors were encouraged to play with it and interact.
Emilia Evans-Munton said: “The more a soft toy becomes squashed or loses its shape, the more it has been loved. People’s participation revives that affection and gives the socks monkey a new life.”
The straw has now been removed and the monkey is being kept in her grandmother’s attic for safekeeping.
