A family’s pet cockatiel in the United States has earned the Guinness World Records title for being the oldest known parrot of its species.
The cockatiel, named Sonny, achieved the record at the age of 32 years and 292 days — a milestone officially verified by the organization in October 2025. The bird celebrated its 33rd birthday on January 10 this year.
Sonny’s owner, Janet Reicher from the US state of Illinois, said the cockatiel became part of their family back in 1993 when it was only a few weeks old.
She added that Sonny once had a much larger vocabulary, but now uses only a few words in its old age.
