Australia opened their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 67-run victory over Ireland at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
After electing to bat, Australia posted 182 for six in their allotted 20 overs. Josh Inglis struck 37 from 17 balls, while Matt Renshaw compiled 37 from 33 deliveries. Marcus Stoinis provided late impetus with 45 off 29 balls. Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett remained unbeaten on 11 apiece to carry the total beyond the 180 mark.
Ireland’s bowlers found intermittent success. Mark Adair claimed two wickets, while Matthew Humphreys, George Dockrell and Harry Tector took one each. In reply to 183, Ireland faltered and were dismissed for 115 in 16.5 overs. Captain Paul Stirling retired hurt on the first ball of the innings, and the top order failed to recover. George Dockrell offered resistance with 41 from 29 balls, but lacked support.
Nathan Ellis delivered a decisive spell, returning four for 12 in 3.5 overs. Adam Zampa also secured four wickets, conceding 23 runs in his four overs. Australia maintained control throughout the chase and sealed victory with 19 balls remaining.
Ellis was named player of the match award for his match-winning performance.
