To protect animals from extreme heat, the Rio de Janeiro Biopark Zoo in Brazil has started offering popsicles and frozen food to its residents.
Zoo officials said the frozen treats were tailored to the dietary needs of various animals, including jaguars, monkeys, and others. Some animals received frozen fruits, while others were given frozen meat mixed with blood.
A group of monkeys enjoyed watermelon popsicles, while a jaguar was seen trying to catch chicken popsicles floating in its water tank.
Zoo biologist Leticia Feitosa explained that when the jaguar attempts to extract the frozen treats, it also drinks water, which helps maintain proper hydration.
Officials added that providing frozen food is part of routine animal care, used to help regulate body temperature during heatwaves. Similar measures were taken last year to cope with extreme temperatures in southeastern Brazil.
