Following the Gul Plaza incident in Karachi, the Punjab government has decided to take significant steps to improve fire safety systems across the province.
In an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, approval was granted for the installation of world-class external fire hydrants throughout Punjab.
Sources say the Chief Minister has instructed WASA to ensure fire hydrants are installed at a distance of 400 feet from commercial buildings, with a second hydrant positioned every 500 feet thereafter.
Officials added that the external fire hydrants will be strategically placed in crowded markets, bazaars, and commercial areas to ensure immediate access in case of an emergency.
The Secretary of Emergency Services Punjab has formally communicated the plan to the Secretary of Housing, recommending immediate implementation of the project.
The Punjab government stated that these measures aim to minimize loss of life and property in fire incidents while providing rescue agencies with timely resources to respond effectively.
