Sri Lanka has unveiled the world’s largest natural purple star sapphire, now on public display in the capital, Colombo.
The extraordinary gemstone weighs 3,563 carats, and its owners have expressed willingness to sell it. Experts estimate its value at a minimum of $300 million, with some valuing it as high as $400 million.
Gemologist Ashan Amarasighe revealed that the round-shaped jewel has been named the “Star of Pure Land” and is the largest verified natural purple star sapphire in the world. The stone features a prominent star effect, which significantly enhances both its rarity and value.
Amarasighe explained that the sapphire exhibits a six-rayed star, a distinctive feature that sets it apart from other gemstones. The stone has been polished and is currently held by the Star of Pure Land team, whose members remain anonymous for security reasons.
One of the owners shared that the gemstone was discovered in 2023 during mining near Ratnapura, often called Sri Lanka’s “City of Gems.” Initially purchased alongside other gems, it took nearly two years for its extraordinary nature to be recognized. Its authenticity was later confirmed by two independent laboratories.
Amarasighe noted that international experts have valued the sapphire between $300 million and $400 million, emphasizing that Sri Lankan sapphires are globally celebrated for their distinctive colors, clarity, and brilliance.
