Danish badminton star and world number three Anders Antonsen has withdrawn from the India Open, citing ‘extreme pollution’ in New Delhi.
“Many are curious why I have pulled out of the India Open for the third consecutive year,” the 28-year-old wrote on his Instagram stories early Wednesday.
“Due to the extreme pollution in Delhi at the moment, I don’t think it’s a suitable place to host a badminton tournament. Crossing my fingers that it will be better in the summer when the World Championships take place in Delhi.”
Antonsen, who was seeded sixth in the tournament, also revealed that the Badminton World Federation has fined him $5,000 once again for his withdrawal.
He shared a screenshot from air quality monitor IQAir, showing Delhi’s AQI at 348 at 3:30am local time, placing it in the “hazardous” category.
Delhi and surrounding areas often experience thick smog during winter, as cold air traps construction dust, vehicle emissions, and smoke from agricultural fires, causing widespread respiratory issues. Authorities have previously responded by closing schools, halting construction, and restricting private vehicles.
Antonsen’s withdrawal brings the total number of players pulling out of the India Open, which offers a $950,000 prize pool, to four. Other withdrawals include compatriot and 2025 champion Viktor Axelsen, China’s Li Shi Feng, and France’s Arnaud Merkle.
