Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen anticipated a draw in his ongoing online battle against over 140,000 players in a monumental clash that brought together a solitary chess genius and a global army of opponents,
The match, titled "Magnus Carlsen vs the World", pitted the undisputed world number one against a collective known as Team World, in an unconventional format of freestyle chess. Carlsen, who became the world’s top-ranked player in 2011, stated the match leaned towards a stalemate as the game approached perpetual check.
"Right now we're heading for a draw by perpetual check," said Carlsen. The grandmaster added, “I felt that I was a little bit better, early in the opening, then maybe I didn't play that precisely. Honestly, since then, they haven't given me a single chance. So now, I think, it's just heading towards the draw."
The game commenced on 4 April and granted each side 24 hours to vote and make a move. Team World, using collective voting, selected every response to Carlsen’s plays.
The freestyle chess format, chosen for this contest, randomly shuffled the major pieces—bishops, knights, rooks, queen, and king—while leaving pawns in their traditional positions. This arrangement gained popularity for its capacity to foster creativity and reduce reliance on memorised strategies.
The expectations for Carlsen’s dominance ran high prior to the match. Despite forecasts of a sweeping victory for the Norwegian prodigy, rules allowed Team World to compel a draw through three consecutive checks against Carlsen’s king—an outcome now strongly anticipated.
From Oslo, grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, who attained the title at the age of 13, stood as a unique figure within the chess world. By 2014, he had achieved the highest chess rating in history at 2882 and preserved his status as the world’s premier player for over a decade. His influence extended beyond the board. Last year, during a tournament in New York, he exited the event after refusing to replace his jeans. Though he later accepted a fine, tournament officials subsequently relaxed the dress code.
