In a major recognition of its rich history and vibrant culture, Lahore has been awarded the title of "ECO Tourism Capital" for the year 2027. The announcement was made during the sixth ministerial meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) held in Izmir, Turkey.
The efforts to have Lahore declared as the ECO Tourism Capital began earlier in 2024, led by an active campaign from Pakistan’s delegation. Through effective diplomacy, Pakistan successfully persuaded Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan to withdraw their nominations, clearing the way for Lahore’s selection.
A special documentary showcasing Lahore’s historic, cultural, and architectural heritage was also presented at the meeting, highlighting the city's immense tourism potential. The Pakistani delegation had reached Izmir on April 25 to participate in the crucial selection process.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb both hailed the achievement as a major honour for Pakistan and Punjab. Sharing her views on social media platform X, Maryam Nawaz expressed gratitude to ECO member states for choosing Lahore, calling the city “the city of history, heritage, and love.”
“With its magnificent historical legacy, colourful culture, and immense potential, Lahore is ready to welcome the world. As the ECO Tourism Capital 2027, Lahore is set to become a shining center on the global scene,” Maryam Nawaz said. She also reaffirmed her commitment to showcasing the beauty of Punjab and Lahore to international visitors.
The Punjab Ministry of Tourism had been working diligently for the past four months to secure this prestigious title. Earlier, the ECO ambassador also visited Lahore at the invitation of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, further strengthening the city’s candidacy.
Each year, the ECO selects one city from its 10 member states to be honoured as the Tourism Capital, aiming to promote tourism and cultural exchange across the region. Lahore’s selection marks a significant moment, putting Pakistan’s "city of gardens" firmly on the world tourism map.
