In the wake of England’s disappointing run in the Champions Trophy, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a significant leadership change, appointing 25-year-old Harry Brook as the new captain for the national white-ball teams.
Brook will now lead England in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), taking over the role from veteran Jos Buttler, who stepped down following the team’s underwhelming performance in the tournament. England, the defending champions, failed to make a strong impact, prompting a strategic shift in direction.
The ECB paid tribute to Buttler’s achievements and years of service but emphasized the need for renewed energy and long-term planning. Brook, known for his fearless batting and calm presence at the crease, has emerged as a dependable figure in England’s middle order since debuting in 2022.
"Harry is among the brightest talents in world cricket and has demonstrated remarkable maturity for his age," an ECB official said. "His on-field performance and natural leadership make him the perfect candidate to lead this team into a new era."
This move signals the ECB’s intention to build a younger, more dynamic squad ahead of upcoming global tournaments, including the 2026 T20 World Cup and the next ODI World Cup.

Despite stepping down, Jos Buttler’s legacy remains intact. He famously led England to T20 World Cup glory in 2022 and has been widely respected for his leadership and sportsmanship. While results in recent months were mixed, Buttler is expected to continue contributing to the team as a senior player and key figure in the dressing room.
