The Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) mentioned on Sunday that the election tribunals had made decisions on 30 per cent of the total petitions, leaving 70% unresolved.
According to a report released by the Fafen, three tribunals decided on nine petitions, while tribunals in Bahawalpur and Karachi each delivered verdicts on one petition. Of the 11 decided cases, six were from independent candidates supported by the PTI, four were from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and one was from the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).
As of January 2025, the tribunals had delivered verdicts on 112 election petitions, with 11 decisions being announced in that month alone.
Moreover, Fafen stated in its report that all 11 cases were dismissed by the election tribunals in January. Following legal challenges in Punjab, there had been an improvement in the speed of decisions related to election petitions.
The Fafen report revealed that tribunals in Balochistan had made decisions on 41 out of 51 petitions, while those in Punjab had decided on 45 out of 192 petitions. The tribunals in Sindh had resolved 17 out of 83 petitions, and those in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had made decisions on nine out of 42 petitions.
The report further noted that, with respect to national assembly seats, decisions had been made on 25 out of 123 petitions, and regarding provincial assembly seats, verdicts had been delivered on 87 out of 248 petitions. The Supreme Court had received 38 appeals challenging the election tribunals' decisions: 24 from Balochistan, 10 from Punjab, and four from Sindh.
So far, the Supreme Court had ruled on three appeals, with one being accepted and two rejected. The election tribunals had dismissed 108 of the 112 petitions, while three were accepted.
One petition was dismissed due to the death of the petitioner, and a re-polling was ordered for three seats in the Balochistan Assembly.
