Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar stated that the £190 million case is a legal matter, and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership should demonstrate political maturity by not linking judicial decisions with political issues.
Tarar talking to a private TV channel said that the government is not in a position to issue an executive order in the £190 million case following the 14-year prison sentence handed to Imran Khan.
However, he pointed out that “there is one person who holds this authority.”
The law minister explained that the matter of clemency lies between the prisoner and the head of state, the President. “If Imran Khan submits a mercy petition to President Asif Ali Zardari, the president could grant him a pardon,” he said.
As a student of law, he refrained from delving deeper into the issue but highlighted that Article 45 of the Constitution gives the President the authority to grant clemency.
"There are judicial precedents on this," Tarar added. “If a person submits a mercy plea to the president and the president finds the individual deserving of clemency, they have the right to grant a pardon.”
