Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has voiced his concerns over the recent amendment of Article 8, stating that he was informed of the changes too late in the process.
In an interview, he expressed disappointment with the government’s handling of the amendment, describing it as a rushed decision without adequate consultation.
The PPP chairman highlighted the significance of considering views from all stakeholders, stating that effective consultation should encompass a wider variety of opinions.
He observed that the Charter of Democracy had first suggested creating constitutional courts to enhance democratic institutions as part of the reform process. He believes these reforms are not just needed but long overdue.
The Bhutto scion went on to address the rumours that the constitutional amendments were made with the intent to keep a specific political figure, widely interpreted as the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), behind bars.
He argued that judicial reforms should not be driven by personal vendettas and should instead focus on the broader needs of the judiciary and the democratic process.
Bilawal further criticized the perceived double standards in the judicial system, pointing out the stark differences in how political figures are treated.
He highlighted that while the PTI founder faces issues with basic amenities in jail, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was once asked to appear in court without security and transport, yet a convicted individual is provided a luxury vehicle for court appearances.
