A delegation from the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), led by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the proposed constitutional amendment.
The high-level meeting took place at the Prime Minister House and focused on key political matters, including consultations on the amendment.
The PPP delegation included senior party leaders Khursheed Shah, Naveed Qamar, and Murtaza Wahab. On the government side, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar were also present.
During the meeting, both parties discussed strategies for garnering wider political support for the proposed amendment, particularly the efforts to bring Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), on board with the changes.
According to an official statement, PM Sharif and the PPP leadership engaged in detailed discussions on a proposed constitutional amendment. The meeting emphasized the need for broadening consultations with political parties to reach a consensus on the amendment in the coming days.
It was agreed that the PPP leadership would play an active role in further consultations. The meeting also saw participation from key federal ministers, including Law Minister Nazir Tarar, Ahad Khan Cheema, and Attaullah Tarar. Alongside the constitutional amendment, the country's overall political situation was also reviewed.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister welcomed the recent improvements in the country’s economic indicators. He highlighted that, for the first time in several years, the inflation rate had dropped to single digits in the previous month. The Prime Minister also noted the State Bank’s decision to reduce the policy rate by 2%, which has boosted investor confidence in the economy.
To provide further relief to the public, Sharif announced a reduction in petroleum prices. He expressed optimism, saying, "Thanks to Allah, we are seeing signs of gradual improvement for the country and the nation."
Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed that constitutional amendments and legislation fall within the domain of parliament, the supreme institution entrusted with representing the will of 240 million people. He emphasized that the proposed amendment aims to provide faster and more effective justice to the public.
