President Joe Biden condemned the violence, and world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, expressed shock and wished Trump a speedy recovery.
The Russian foreign ministry used the incident to criticize US support for Ukraine, suggesting that funds would be better spent on improving domestic law enforcement.
Despite the attack, there are no plans for Russian President Putin to contact Trump, and the Kremlin emphasized that the legitimacy of the upcoming US election is not for them to judge.
