Apple could be preparing to raise the prices of its iPhone 17 lineup from August 10, according to a new leak circulating on Weibo.
The claim remains unconfirmed, and even the leaker behind it has expressed uncertainty over whether the reported price increase will actually happen.
Weibo-based leaker Fixed Focus Digital, who has a generally strong track record, said rumours are circulating that Apple could increase iPhone 17 prices from August 10.
The leaker did not present the information as confirmed, instead indicating that it was difficult to say whether the change would actually take place. They also suggested that Apple has changed or scaled back plans related to production capacity on some manufacturing lines, although it is unclear whether that is directly connected to retail pricing.
Apple has not announced any iPhone 17 price increase or revealed which models, if any, could become more expensive.
Rising memory and storage costs
The reported move comes after Apple raised prices on several other products in late June, including Macs, iPads, HomePods, Apple TV and Vision Pro.
The company has faced rising memory and storage chip costs, driven in part by growing demand for components from the artificial intelligence industry. Apple CEO Tim Cook has described the surge in memory pricing as an unusually severe market disruption.
The iPhone, along with AirPods and Apple Watch, was spared from the June price increases. The latest leak suggests that the iPhone may now also face higher costs.
Why Apple could change iPhone 17 prices now
An iPhone 17 price increase would be unusual because Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation flagship models in September.
Analysts have already anticipated higher prices for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with some estimates suggesting increases of $100 to $200, largely because of continuing component-cost pressures.
However, Apple's 2026 iPhone launch strategy is reportedly different from previous years. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to arrive in September alongside Apple's first foldable iPhone, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are reportedly being pushed to spring 2027.
That could leave the iPhone 17 serving as Apple's mainstream, more affordable option for longer than a typical previous-generation model.
Which iPhone models could become more expensive?
The leak does not specify whether a potential price increase would apply to the entire iPhone 17 family or only selected models.
That leaves several questions unanswered, including whether the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max would also become more expensive and whether the iPhone Air would be affected.
Raising the price of the current Pro models could be more complicated because their successors are expected to launch within weeks. Apple could instead target models that are likely to remain in its lineup for a longer period.
Japan has already seen iPhone price increases of around 8% to 11% in July, adding to concerns that higher component costs could eventually be passed on to consumers in other markets.
What could happen to iPhone 16 prices?
A potential August price increase also raises questions about Apple's existing iPhone 16 models.
Historically, Apple removes the previous-generation Pro models when introducing a new iPhone series, while keeping non-Pro models at reduced prices. Last September, for example, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus each became $100 cheaper, falling to $699 and $799 respectively.
If Apple increases iPhone 17 prices now, consumers will be watching closely to see whether those prices are later reduced after the iPhone 18 launch.
A price adjustment on the current generation could provide an early indication of Apple's pricing strategy for the iPhone 18 family.
For example, if the iPhone 17 Pro were to rise from $1,099 to $1,199, it could raise questions about whether the iPhone 18 Pro will launch at a similarly higher price. Some reports have already suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro could cost around $200 more than its predecessor.
Likewise, if the standard iPhone 17 rises from $799 to $899, consumers may wonder whether Apple would eventually reduce it again to $799 once the next-generation lineup expands.
The delayed arrival of the regular iPhone 18 until spring 2027 could make the iPhone 17 particularly important in Apple's mainstream lineup during the transition.
Should you buy iPhone 17 now?
For consumers considering an iPhone 17, the situation remains uncertain because Apple has not confirmed the reported price change.
August is typically a slower period for iPhone purchases because buyers know a new generation is expected within weeks. Many customers therefore wait for the latest models or hope to see lower prices on existing devices.
However, if the reported iPhone 17 price increase takes effect on August 10, it could change the calculation for buyers who were already considering purchasing one.
More importantly, any August adjustment could provide an early signal of how much Apple's new iPhone models may cost when they arrive in September.
For now, the alleged August 10 iPhone 17 price hike remains a rumour rather than an official Apple announcement.
It is also unclear whether the reported change would cover the entire iPhone 17 range, specific models, or no models at all. Consumers will therefore have to wait for Apple or its retail partners to confirm whether prices are actually changing.
