An extraordinary meeting of the Judicial Commission convened to appoint judges to the Supreme Court, witnessed disagreement over procedural matters.
According to sources, Justice Muneeb Akhtar proposed postponing the meeting until the ongoing constitutional amendment regarding the appointment of judges is finalized.
Citing a similar postponement in May for the same reason, Justice Akhtar argued that proceeding without clarity on the amendment could complicate the process.
However, the proposal was met with resistance from other members of the commission.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah read out the draft of the proposed recommendations during the meeting, signaling his disagreement with delaying the session.
The provincial law ministers, including the Law Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, expressed gratitude to Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa for including them in the selection committee for High Court judges—a move that was agreed upon in earlier discussions.
Justice Akhtar raised questions about the constitutional amendment, which had been discussed in previous meetings, but Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan argued that the Judicial Commission does not have the authority to question the government on such matters.
Following response, Justice Akhtar walked out of the meeting, sources said.
