Stargazers in Pakistan are in for a celestial treat tonight as the biggest supermoon of the year will be visible across the country, according to a spokesperson for the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).
The event, known as the “Beaver Supermoon,” occurs when the moon moves closest to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual in the night sky.
Beaver Supermoon to reach its peak at 6:19pm
The supermoon will reach its peak at 6:19pm, when it will be just 221,817 miles away from Earth. SUPARCO's spokesperson said the moon will appear 9.7% larger and 16% brighter than its usual size and luminosity.
“This will be a spectacular sight for skywatchers, as the moon will dominate the evening sky with its brilliance,” the spokesperson added.
What makes it 'Beaver Supermoon'
The November full moon is traditionally called the Beaver Moon, named by Native American tribes to mark the time of year when beavers build their winter dams. Since this full moon also coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth, it earns the title of a Beaver Supermoon.
According to SUPARCO, this is the second supermoon of the year, following an earlier one visible a few months ago. The next and final supermoon of the year is expected to occur in December.
