Quick claim to fame: Here are ten commoners who got overnight fame

The advent of social media and Internet has changed a lot of from how things used to turned out in past. Now, just a video on any social media platform including YouTube or Facebook may transport you up to the level of celebrity.

One ready example is Priya Prakash Varrier. The 18-year-old actor from Kerala was not known to media some days back. But a 3.16-minute trailer of Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love catapulted the teenage girl to international fame. At home, Varrier currently enjoys the status of what you call “national crush”.

The Youtube video features the song Manikua Malaraya Poovi, with Varrier, in a snippet that lasts for 30 seconds, shown locking gazes, raising brows and winking at a classmate who is shown with expression of admiration. Her wink and smile not only floored the beau but the world.

The 30-second part of the clip has done the magic for Varrier who has become an Internet sensation overnight, attracting three million followers on Instagram over the weekend, the third highest single-day climb on the platform when 606K users followed her in a single day.

Only Kylie Jenner and Cristiano Ronaldo have added more users in a single day.

Twitter has 80 fan accounts dedicated to her – some with close to 85,000 followers. And on Facebook, 251K users follow her official page.

2. Arshad Khan, Chaiwala
Arshad Khan, a handsome tea vendor in Pakistan found overnight fame after his photograph was shared by a certain girl on social media. The ChaiWala won a modelling contract. The Mardan-born Chaiwala sold tea in Islamabad. Arshad Khan’s blue eyes are his claim to fame.

Casually snapped by a photographer known as Javeria or Jiah Ali, the images of Khan, with his blue eyes, stubble, and thick locks, quickly spread all over Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

3. Choi Young-jae, bodyguard
How can an attractive picture work wonders for anyone? The question was best answered in Choi Young-jae’s favor, who was bodyguard of South Korean president.

Soon, the internet fell in love with the 36 years old dreamy young bodyguard. Choi is not a professional bodyguard, according to South Korean media.

Choi studied security service at Yong In University and served in South Korea’s Special Warfare Command as an officer for 10 years.

4. Huma Liaqat, commercial pilot
Huma Liaquat is a commercial female pilot at Pakistan International Airlines. The first PIA officer for Airbus 320 turned into Internet sensation after her smiles in adorable pictures caught everyone’s attention.

Her beautiful pictures showing her in PIA uniform were widely shared by social media buffs.

The international media cited her flamboyance and pretty looks as her claim to fame that made her an overnight star.

5. Saima Hussain Mir, girl in Shah Rukh Khan’s selfie
While promoting his film Raees, Bollywood’s King Shah Rukh Khan visited a girls college in Pune where he took a selfie with students. Saima was preeminent in the actor’s selfie. It is as though the selfie was taken for her alone.

The selfie went viral, but not because of SRK but for the girl, Saima Hussain Mir, who was there in his background. The lone selfie raised the teenage girl to stardom.

Some random traveller took pictures of an airport officer checking travel documents in Singapore. The pictures were soon shared like hotcakes across the Internet on social media platform.

It was 22-year old Lee Minwei who lives in Singapore. The pictures made him an internet sensation with his boyish good looks and charming smile.

Omar Borkan Al Gala is yet another person whose manly looks earned him overnight fame. The handsome hunk was deported from Saudi Arabia after being fired for being so attractive. He became popular after his model-like images were published by Arab newspaper.

With practically no claim to fame, Dhinchak Pooja was noticed by all and sundry with her quirky singing and over-cool confidence. The UP-based YouTube singer has amassed 353k subscribers for her cringe-cool videos.

Her heavy-on-ear singing got her the fame that also led her to India’s most popular reality show Bigg Boss hosted by superstar Salman Khan.

10. Qandeel Baloch, a social media nerd
Qandeel Baloch is the last commoner in this list. She aspired to be a singer, model and an actress. However, her brief career remained mired in controversies.
