BIHAR: Indian police have given a rather strange excuse for the disappearance of thousands of litres of confiscated alcohol–that rats drunk the entire lot.
Alcohol has been banned in the eastern Indian state of Bihar since last year. Ever since, police have seized as much as 900,000 litres of alcohol.
Patna city’s police chief claimed that his subordinates informed him that much of the alcohol remains no more since it was consumed by rats.
More than 40,000 persons have been arrested ever since the alcohol ban came into effect in India. Massive stocks of alcohol bottles seized in operations across Bihar were stacked in police stations. Some police stations had to rent private storage facilities to keep the alcohol.
Police have ordered an inquiry into claims that rats drunk almost 900,000 litres of confiscated alcohol. The ban was placed in order to prevent crimes, domestic violence, poverty and harassment.
