Facebook to send delegation to Pakistan over blasphemy row

March 16, 2017

ISLAMABAD: Social media giant Facebook will be sending a delegation to Pakistan, the interior ministry said Thursday.

The move comes days after government threatened to permanently block social media websites including Facebook if they refuse to cooperate in taking down blasphemous content.

A spokesperson for the ministry said that Facebook has even named a focal person to contact Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The Facebook administration is of the opinion that dialogue regarding the issue would lead to the permanent solution to the issue.

Earlier today, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said Facebook administration has been asked to cooperate in tracing the criminals behind the blasphemy while cooperation from the United States Administration was also being sought through US Embassy in Pakistan in this regard.

The Minister also urged the international community to have broad consultations on the issue of blasphemy as it has become a critical matter for the world. Social media sites should cooperate to prevent uploading of any blasphemous content, he added.
