Facebook has created a dedicated artificial intelligence tool to help it identify offensive language.
The social media site’s system, codenamed ‘Rosetta’, will help it read the text that appears in memes (and other images and video frames) that are shared on Facebook and Instagram.
While tools to transcribe text are nothing new, Facebook faces different challenges because of the size of its platform.
In a blog post, Facebook’s developers wrote: “Understanding text in images along with the context in which it appears also helps our systems proactively identify inappropriate or harmful content and keep our community safe.”
Rosetta is said to be live now and extracts text from a billion images and video frames per day across both Facebook and Instagram.
