Australia need just seven more wickets to inflict yet another whitewash on Pakistan as the visitors finished day three on 39-3, still 248 runs behind.

Here are three talking points from the third day’s play as Pakistan lost seven wickets across two innings after being forced to follow on.

  1. Yasir Shah will be telling his children about this tour: This tour has been quite peculiar for Yasir Shah. As things stand, he has the best batting average of any player in the side this series at 60.33, while also having the worst bowling average of any player in the side this series at 100.5. His century on day three marked a topsy-turvy tour that has been a horrible failure while also being an unprecedented success. Only Babar Azam has made more runs and nobody has faced more deliveries than the leg-spinner. It might be too late for Yasir Shah to be the new Steve Smith though.
  2. Mitchell Starc shows his class: Starc the red-ball bowler hasn’t ever seemed as ominous as Starc the white-ball bowler but he showed just why he is one of the finest wicket-takers of his generation to finish with six wickets in the first innings before dismissing skipper Azhar Ali in the second innings.
  3. Australia are far ahead of Pakistan: By their standards, it was a sloppy day for Australia as they looked careless in the field and generous with the ball and yet managed to claim seven wickets on the day. Even an Australia side well below their best is enough to overwhelm Pakistan and the gulf between the two sides has been emphatically laid bare by the ruthless Australians.

Return the captainship to Sarfraz Ahmed. He was the best and most successful captain. Give him free hand in the selection of the team
