Pakistani batsman Azhar Ali scored a century which helped Somerset beat Essex by 36 runs under the DLS method in the Royal London One-Day Cup at Taunton.
Azhar Ali and Peter Trego both scored centuries and scored a 217-run partnership on the second wicket which was a Somerset record for any wicket in List A games against Essex.
Azhar went on to score 110 while Trego contributed 141 to a total as the side finished at 353-5 after the side was invited to bat in a contest reduced to 39 overs per side due to rain.
Essex, chasing a 354-run target, were 82-3 in 12 overs when rain forced a lengthy interval. The target was revised to 109 from five overs and the side fell 37 runs short.
Azhar reached his half-century off 45 balls and crossed triple figures after 43 deliveries.
Azhar’s knock included nine boundaries and four maximums.
