Australian legend spinner Shane Warne believes former skipper Steve Smith and David Warner can help Australia win the World Cup for the second time in a row.
The spinner believes the duo, who were handed international bans for their involvement in the ‘Sandpaper Scandal’, will be welcomed back into the side with open arms once their punishment ends this month.
“I think Smith and Warner will be accepted with open arms. They have done their time. They are not bad people, they just made a bad mistake,” he said in an interview to Sky Sports News. “I have forgiven them. They have done 12 months which was very harsh. I don’t agree with what they did and I was very disappointed in those actions.”
“When you have got that sort of class as a cricketer, they will go straight back into the World Cup squad. The way Australia are playing at the moment, I wouldn’t write them off and I think they can win the World Cup.”
Smith and Warner have not been allowed to play top-level cricket since they were handed a 12-month ban in the ball-tampering scandal during Australia’s tour of South Africa in March 2018.
However, the pair could be included into the team ahead of the World Cup in England and Wales, as well as the Ashes series.
