Cameron Delport’s unbeaten ton and Faheem Ashraf’s six-wicket haul helped Islamabad United beat Lahore Qalandars by 49 runs in their Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2019 fixture at the National Stadium in Karachi on Saturday.

The victory ensures Islamabad United’s place in the playoff stage.

Being sent in to bat first, Qalandars struck first-blood as Luke Ronchi was dismissed on the first ball of the game. However, Cameron Delport had other plans on his mind and began the onslaught.

The South African batsman began to smash the opposition to all parts of the ground. He and Phil Salt put up a 32-run partnership on the second wicket before the latter was dismissed after scoring 10 runs.

Cameron Delport and Chadwick Walton didn’t let up and continued to pile runs for the side. They scored a 118-run partnership on the third wicket before the Windies batsman got out on 48.

Asif Ali then joined the party and struck a late 55-run while Cameron Delport remained unbeaten at 117 runs. Islamabad finished their innings at 238-3 in their 20 overs.

Lahore Qalandars began their chase of 239-run target on a positive note as skipper Fakhar Zaman and Anton Devcich scored a 51-run partnership on the first wicket. Devcich was the first to be dismissed as he was back in the pavilion after scoring 18 runs.

Soon after Fakhar Zaman’s departure on 38, the batting side started to unravel. Sohail Akhtar scored a late 75-run knock but the side kept losing wickets. Faheem Ashraf finished with an astounding figure of 6-19 in his four overs.

Records galore

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) returned to Pakistan in historic style as several records tumble in the game between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars.

Highest total

Islamabad United’s 238 against Lahore is the highest score ever made in the PSL, beating Lahore’s 204 earlier in this edition.

Fastest century

Cameron Delport scored his century in 49 deliveries. The South African left-hander played one of the finest knocks in recent memory.

Fastest half-century

Asif Ali went berserk at the end and equaled Kamran Akmal’s record for the fastest half-century in PSL history, reaching the landmark off just 17 deliveries.

Second highest individual score

Colin Ingram had scored an unbeaten 127 earlier in the season but Delport came mightily close to breaking his compatriot’s figure with his unbeaten 117.

Third-highest power play score

The 70 runs scored by United was the third-highest powerplay score in the history of the PSL. Quetta’s 77 in the PSL’s first edition were the highest, whereas Lahore and Islamabad tied for the second spot with 75 in PSL’s 2017 and 2018 editions respectively.

Most expensive figures

Shaheen Shah Afridi is a brave young bowler but his bravery went against him as there was no respite for the teenager in the crunch match. His four overs went for a whopping 62 runs, despite him dismissing Luke Ronchi off the first ball.
