Defending champions Islamabad United clinched a four-wicket win over Karachi Kings in first of the two Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2019 eliminators at the National Stadium of Karachi on Thursday.

The win ends Karachi Kings’ PSL 2019 journey. United will play Peshawar Zalmi in the second eliminator on Friday for a place in the final.

Karachi — electing to bat in the knockout fixture — got off to a flyer as the side scored their highest ever powerplay total with 78-1. Openers Babar Azam and Colin Munro went on to score a 52-run partnership before the latter was dismissed for 32.

Liam Livingstone made 30 runs while Babar Azam top-scored with 42 runs.

The middle-order did not provide any resistance to the Islamabad bowlers and the side managed just 161-9 in their 20 overs.

United’s start of the 162-run target did not go as planned as power-hitting opener Luke Ronchi went back after scoring just five runs. However, Cameron Delport and Alex Hales steadied the side with their 44-run partnership on the second wicket.

Umer Khan — who has a knack of dismissing key bowlers — struck twice in the same over which put the defending champions in a spot of bother.

However, Alex Hales did not bow under pressure and went on to score a 51-run partnership with Hussain Talat before getting dismissed for 41. Hussain Talat was the next batsman to head back to the pavilion as he contributed 32 runs with the bat.

Asif Ali scored a late 24 off 10 deliveries as the side finally completed the run chase with four wickets and three balls to spare.
