The 2018 Hockey World Cup fixture between Pakistan and Malaysia ended in a 1-1 draw in Indian city of Bhubaneswar on Wednesday to leave the Greenshirts needing a win against Netherlands if they are to qualify for the next round.

Muhammad Atiq’s strike in the 51st minute gave Pakistan the lead in the must-win fixture.

However, the Malaysian side equalized just four minutes later with a goal from Faizal Saari.

Meanwhile, Germany thrashed Netherlands by 4-1 in the first match of the day.

Valentin Verga gave the Dutch side a shock lead in the 13th minute of the game.

But normal service was resumed as the Germans came back in spectacular fashion to net four times.

Mathias Muller scored the equalizer in the 30th minute before Lukas Windfeder made it 2-1 in the 52nd minute.

Marco Miltkau netted Germany’s third goal two minutes later. Jan Christopher Ruhr scored the fourth and final goal two minutes before time.

With a loss and draw to their name, Pakistan will qualify for the next stage if they beat Netherlands on December 9.

Germany top Pool D with six points while Netherlands are in second place with three points. Pakistan and Malaysia are third and fourth with a point each, separated only by goal difference.
