Athletes are considered role models and are a source of inspiration for youngsters. However, there are some athletes who tainted their careers after being found guilty of different crimes such as murder, rape, inappropriate behavior or fixing and were sent to jail.
Here are several athletes who did the time for their crimes.
Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were handed jail setences over their involvement in the 2010 spot fixing scandal during the tour of England. Amir faced a six-month prison sentence while Butt and Asif were handed a 30-month and one-year jail sentences respectively.
The South African fast bowler proved to be workhorse in the team but he had to spend time in jail after being accused of rape. He was acquitted as there was not enough evidence to prove his guilt.
The celebrated swimmer from South Africa was handed a prison sentence of up to five years for murdering his girlfriend.
Dubbed the “baddest man on the planet”, Mike Tyson was handed a six-year prison sentence for rape but was released on parole after serving just three years.
The American track and field athlete was sentenced to six months in prison for lying to authorities about her use of performance enhancing drugs.
The Manchester United striker had to spent two weeks in jail for kicking a spectator during a league match.
The boxer was sentenced to three months in jail for domestic abuse. He was released after serving two months in prison.
The American footballer was sentenced to 33 years in jail for kidnapping, armed robbery, the murder of his wife and other charges. He has now been released.
