Rangpur Riders would bank on their winning momentum to get past Dhaka Dynamites in the final of 2017 Bangladesh Premier League at Dhaka on Tuesday.
They posted two convincing wins over Khulna Titans and Comilla Victorians in the play-offs to storm into the final. Dhaka Dynamites are also on a three-match winning run into the final.
It promises an exciting final between two evenly-matched teams. Cricwizz takes a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the two teams ahead of the BPL final between Dhaka Dynamites and Rangpur Riders.
Rangpur Riders strengths:
Attacking batting unit: They boast of a strong batting unit with few attacking foreign batsmen in Johnson Charles, Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, Ravi Bopara and local talent in Ziaur Rahman and Mohammad Mithun.
Gayle and McCullum roared to form in the play-offs and it is bad news for Rangpur Riders. Another Gayle or McCullum storm can take the trophy away from Riders. Dhaka would bank on their batting-heavy foreign batsmen to take them across the finish line.
Too much dependence on foreign recruits: Their batting is dependent a lot on overseas batsmen as local talent has failed to inspire much confidence. Hence, there is a big mismatch in the batting department. If the batting failed, then Riders will struggle to compete. They are banking on their local bowling talent to do the job for them. Hence, it would be difficult for Riders to get the right combination between local and foreign teams.
Dhaka Dynamites strengths:
Quality players in overseas unit: Dynamites boast of attacking batsmen in Shahid Afridi, Evin Lewis and Kieron Pollard who have produced match-winning performances with bat and ball. Then, they also have specialist T20 bowler in Sunil Narine. Overall, Dynamites have a power-packed overseas line-up with players of specialised and all-round skills.
Inspiring Shakib: Shakib Al Hasan is leading the charge for Dynamites. He is one of the best all-rounders in world cricket across all formats. He has led with aplomb so far in the tournament. It was his all-round show that saw Dynamites grab the top two spots in points table. He has inspired his fellow mates to beat the best in the business. Besides Shakib, they have few exceptional local talent in Mosaddek Hossain, Jahurul Islam. Dynamites have all their bases covered.
Complacency: Dhaka Dynamites must avoid complacency if they wish to win the tournament. They posted a big win over table-toppers Comilla Victorians in Qualifier 1 and that may turn them slight over-confident. They have won one and lost one against Riders in the league phase. They must keep the intensity high as they have done so far in last few games.
Prediction: Dhaka Dynamites have shown more hunger to win and claim success in the tournament as they posted three consecutive wins to storm into the final of the tournament. Rangpur Riders too have done well to win Eliminator and Qualifier 2 to set up a title clash with Dhaka. It promises an exciting final between two closely-fought teams. Our vote goes to Dhaka Dynamites.
Possible winner: Dhaka Dynamites
