Karachi United FC returned to Karachi after a week long and successful tour of Barcelona in which the coaches and players received exclusive training from FC Barcelona Coaches as well as successfully competed against local youth club teams.

In another first, Karachi United became the first club from Pakistan to tour the world-renowned FC Barcelona. Imran Ali, the Director Youth & Alliances stated, “Karachi United was established in 1996 with twin mandates of achieving football excellence and community development through football. As part of its objective to provide the best football development opportunities, Karachi United secured an opportunity for a football tour to one of the biggest football clubs in the world, FC Barcelona in Spain.”

During their week long tour, the Karachi United squad, comprising 53 persons (44 players and 9 officials), was given six exclusive coaching sessions by FCB Coaches, where they learnt about the FCB training philosophy and their values. The coaches Kiko, Oscar and Jordi expressed great satisfaction on the progress shown by the Karachi United players and especially praised their discipline.

The Karachi United squad was housed at the Marcet Fundacion, a renowned Catalonian youth set-up through whose ranks players such as Keylor Navas (Real Madrid) and others came through. During their stay, Karachi United’s four teams (two under 13s, with one of the teams comprising both boys and girls, and two under 16s teams) played over 15 matches.

The Senior Under 16s won two and lost one of their three matches including a fine 3-0 win in their last match against a strong Marcet A side, with Hamed Ali Shah, M. Waheed, Saad Khan and skipper, Abdullah Mohsin (in goal) excelling. The Junior Under 16s also performed creditably, winning two out of their four matches. The highlight was their first match against local club Bosco’s youth team, which ended in a high scoring 7-6 win for the visitors, as man of the match Azain Uqaily scored his 4th and the match winner with almost the last kick of the game. Skipper Omar Jahangir Khan was rock solid in goal with winger Imad Naqvi and midfielder Ali Mehta being the other standout performers.

Although the Senior Under 13s only won one of their four matches, they were edged out 1-2 in their opening match by Marcet B and their other two defeats came against very strong opposition. They did however beat Bosco 8-2 with a hat-trick by Yahya Khalid and two goals apiece for M. Arbaaz Hasan and M.Issa Alizai. Skipper and defender Yahya Saeed Khan, right back Fawaz bin Fawad and midfielder Ayaan Bokhari excelled for this unit with goalie Michael Thompson also performing creditably.

While the Junior Under 13s lost all their 4 matches, they played with great spirit with Elias Sarwana scoring some fantastic long distance goals. Captain, Essa Sakrani and Ashar Rahman were the other outstanding players.

The Karachi United squad also visited the famed FC Barcelona Youth Academy, La Masia and viewed a number of the FCB youth boys and girls team matches. Having earlier also visited the FCB Museum and Camp Nou, the tour was capped off with the Karachi United squad watching a live match at Camp Nou in which a last minute Lionel Messi penalty saw FC Barcelona beat Leganes 2-1.

The KU squad also took time off from their hectic schedule to go sightseeing of the beautiful city of Barcelona. On their last day, the Consul General of Pakistan to Spain, Mr. Murad Ashraf Janjua hosted a reception in honour of the entire squad.

Earlier, the Honorary Spanish Consul General in Karachi, Ghouse Akbar had facilitated the team’s visit to Barcelona and was extremely pleased that the tour went well, which he hoped would be the first of many.

Karachi United’s Director Youth, Imran Ali further stated that the tour provided a unique insight into the FCB training methods and also gave Karachi United a chance to build relations with youth set-ups such as Marcet, which had offered to help with its youth program.

Director Development, Ali Ata, also praised the squad and coaches for their efforts and said that the learnings would be of great benefit back in Pakistan. He was also all praise for their hosts especially Juan who acted as the liaison for the squad and is a former FCB Youth Coach. Ali Ata further stated that Karachi United would be hosting a reception for the Spanish Consul General to thank him for his assistance for the tour and also to celebrate the performances, results and experiences with the players and their parents.
