SOUTHAMPTON: Australia beat England by 59 runs in the first one-day international at Southampton on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
England, set 306 for victory, finished on 246 all out, with 27 balls left in the innings.
Earlier Australia, who won the toss, were in trouble at 193 for six, with leg-spinner Adil Rashid taking four for 59.
But Matthew Wade (71 not out) and Mitchell Marsh (40 not out) shared an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 112 to take World Cup-holders Australia to 305 for six. – AFP
