STRASBOURG: Anti-NATO protesters torched a hotel and border post here as leaders of NATO nations gathered for the second day of the organisation's 60th anniversary summit.

Police and protesters clashed in the French city of Strasbourg on Saturday (April 4) after officers arrested several of the demonstrators.

Anti-NATO protesters hurled stones at officers and tried to break into the red security zone.

French riot police fired tear gas to force back anti-NATO protesters who retaliated by throwing Molotov cocktail petrol bombs at officers in riot gear.

Clashes also erupted earlier on Saturday after protesters defied a security cordon around the city and hurled smoke bombs, rocks and fireworks.

There were no immediate signs that the most closely guarded security zone around the leaders had been breached.

Police said they had arrested 25 demonstrators during the night and estimated 1,800 had left a makeshift protest camp on Strasbourg's outskirts in groups, watched by police helicopters. AGENCIES
