Thousands of Shias protest Israeli attacks

KERBALA: Nearly two thousand Iraqi Shias took to the streets of Kerbala on Sunday (January 4), to protest against the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
The protesters, who gathered near the shrine of Imam Hussein in the
holy Shiite city of Kerbala 80 kilometres (50 mile) southwest of Baghdad, carried Iraqi flags and chanted anti-Israel slogans.
One Shi'ite cleric said the protest was to offer moral support to the Palestinian people.
“This demonstration is to support the wounded Palestinian people
who are a daily target of the Israeli forces while the international, Arab and Muslim communities do nothing to help the Palestinian people,” he said.
The demonstration came as Israel launched a ground attack on the Gaza Strip, after days of aerial bombardment.
Israel launched the offensive on December 27 with the stated aim of
stopping Hamas rocket attacks from Gaza on Israeli towns. Palestinian rockets that have killed four Israelis since then.
Arab and other countries have condemned the Israeli attacks as Israeli warplanes struck around 20 targets in Gaza on Sunday (January 4), raising the death toll in the territory to some 512 Palestinians in seven days of intensive bombing.
Heavy civilian casualties are likely to increase international pressure on Israel to halt its biggest operation in the Gaza Strip in four decades.
