No relief, rehabilitation in sight for Maoist struck Jharkhand villagers

SINGHBHUM: Villagers in India's eastern Jharkhand state ousted of their homes
due to Maoist terror lament authorities' apathy towards their relief and
rehabilitation.

Scores of families who had to leave their homes for the fear of their lives
in gundabanda area in east Singhbhum district of the state said they are
leading a life terror and complete denial.

“We want money to maintain our family, we need some security
arrangements but till now there is nothing. We had to leave village as we used
to get terror threat that we will be killed,” said Dula Ram, a Maoist
victim.

The victims staying in relief camps, about 20 kilometres away from their
villages said they want to get back into their normal life like others in the
state so that even they can provide proper meal and education to their
children.

“We want jobs, we want security from Maoist so that we can lead a
normal life,” Durga Ram, another victim said.

'Nagrik Suraksha Samiti' or Citizen Security Committee, formed by the local
authorities to support the victims said rehabilitation of the villages is a
big issue and until then the villagers would continue to face hardships.

“Rehabilitation is a big issue as villagers from across the area are
staying here and rehab requires land, money and they want to jobs all belong
to farmer community and once they are displaced they face problem,” said
Shankar Hembram, president of Nagrik Suraksha Samiti.

The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of poor peasants and
landless labourers.

They operate in a large swathe of India stretching from the east to some
southern states, mostly in the countryside, and routinely arrange protests,
kill policemen, attack government property and target local politicians.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the four-decade-old Maoist
rebellion as the single biggest threat to India's internal security. Thousands
of people have died in the insurgency so far.
