Federer will regain No.1 world ranking: Bjorn Borg

STOCKHOLM: Borg believes that Roger Federer will regain the number one world ranking in tennis next season, and feels the Swiss star will win next week's season ending Masters Cup event in Shanghai.

Borg also sang the praises of Briton Andy Murray, saying he believed he could win a Grand Slam in 2009.

The tennis legend was talking at a special 'sports exchange' tennis event in the Chinese city that hopes to encourage a new generation of tennis stars.

Borg, an eleven time grand slam winner is considered one of the legends of tennis.

He believes that although Nadal ended the season as the world's number one, Federer will regain the top spot again.

“Even if Nadal is number one player this year for me Roger is the best player. The thing he has been doing for the last four or five years is unbelievable. He is very professional what he is doing, not just on the court but even off the court he has been doing so much good things for tennis in general, not only in his own country Switzerland but all over the world . I think next year Roger will come back and take the number one spot.”

Borg also said he expected the Swiss player to win the Masters Cup event in Shanghai.

Another player who has been doing well this year is Briton Andy Murray, who is now number four in the world and has won two Masters events this season.

Borg believes Murray is destined for even greater things in 2009.

“I believe this player is going to be a great player I think he matured so much the last year and the tennis he has been playing this year is unbelievable. He knows now that he can beat anyone, he knows he can win the big tournaments, he knows that he is in good shape because he can stay out there for a long time. So I think next year is going to be very interesting. He is one of the top players, he has a good chance to win the Masters in Shanghai – but I think next year he has a good chance to win a grand slam tournament for the first time.”

The two sports personalities hope though that their coaching tips will help develop the youngsters' tennis potential further and also provide a springboard for other exchanges in the near future.
