BALI: Secretary, Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF), Chaudhry
Muhammad Asghar said that Pakistan has a fair chance of winning a
medal in the Bali Asian Beach Games wrestling competition which begins
here tomorrow with 11 countries taking part in it.
” We are quite confident of 4-member team success in the event
because it has good potential to win a medal and getting good results
also depends on the draws of the event as well “,he told APP on the
eve of the competition on Thursday.
Pakistan team comprises Ghulam Haider in 65 kgs, Muhammad Ali in
75kgs, Muhammad Tasheen in 85kgs and Usman Majeed in over 85kgs weight categories.
He said Pakistan team did good practice for the Games at a sandy
surface besides a national beach championship was also organised at a similar surface to impart necessary practice to the players.
” It is going to be our first international experience that we will
be playing on sand on which it is too difficult to maintain balance and
then to get hold to a opponent “,he said adding ” I would say beach wrestling is the most difficult style of wrestling as rest of the styles
are played on smooth mat surface barring the traditional style of
Pakistan wrestling which is played on a surface made of soft form of
soil.
He said the rules of Beach wrestling are quite difficult and if a
wrestler is down, no matter in which posture of position, he is
declared a loser.
” But despite all these I am confident that we have a chance to win
a medal as our grapplers are in high spirit and fully prepared for a
tough challenge “, he said.
Before the creation of Central Asian States Pakistan managed to win
medals in wrestling at Asia level but with the participation of former Soviet Union wrestlers now representing various central Asian states it
has become impossible for them (Pakistan) to win a medal.
And in the Beach Games this threat is still following Pakistan as
there are number of wrestlers from Central Asian States and from their
arch rivals India.
” It is sour reality that we could not win a medal at Asia in the
past many years but it does not mean that chances to win a medal are over
for us , we are here to prove that we are a side which have the wrestlers who have the prowess to lead their country to glory”,he asserted.
He said much also depends on draws as well because some times a
country is placed in a tough pool and some times it has the benefit of
a relievedly easy pool.
” But it does not mean that a favourable match competition schedule
can lead us to success what is required a high quality exhibition of
play from the play to avert challenges from start to end and it is the
only way to success “,he said.
