IGP Punjab orders swift action in women and child abuse cases

LAHORE: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Capt (retd) Arif Nawaz Khan Friday said that any delay in police proceedings in women and child abuse cases would not be tolerated.

He said that immediate arrest of culprits in such cases must be ensured.

He gave these directions while addressing all regional and district police officers at Central Police Office here on Friday through the video link.

He said that the dereliction of officials in such cases would be dealt with strictly, while firing incidents, or torture of citizens would not be tolerated at any cost.

He stressed on following the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for public handling during protests and sit-ins.

The IG Punjab directed the RPOs and DPOs to take steps to improve efficiency of the Anti-Riots Force during protests and mob demonstrations.

They should also ensure that anti-riots squads are equipped with all necessary gadgets including mega-phones, water-canons etc., to deal with any untoward incident in all the districts.

He also directed that permission should not be given to shoot citizens, even during severe protests.

In such circumstances, the DPOs themselves should command and brief the personnel about sensitive situation of their duty, so that they may perform their duties diligently and with full commitment.

The situation of women and child abuse was also assessed in all districts of province. The IGP directed all DPOs to devise a comprehensive strategy to put a hindrance to women and child abuse and furnish regular weekly report to the Central Police Office in Lahore.

The conference was attended by Additional Inspector General Operations Amir Zulfiqar Khan, AIG Operations Muhammad Kashif and PS to IGP Sajjad Hassan Manj with other officers.
