ISLAMABAD: Chaos and racket by lawyers and supporters of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz forced the Accountability Court in Islamabad to postpone indictment of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar in a graft case on Friday.

Let’s have a look at what actually happened inside the court according to our sources.

As the hearing begun, Maryam Nawaz and her husband Safdar reached the court.

Soon after their arrival, a large number of PML-N lawyers and supporters attempted to enter the courtroom at the Federal Judicial Complex.

However, they were barred by police and FC officials deployed on security.

It triggered chaos and scuffles during which PML-N lawyers and supporters shoved chief prosecutor of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and slapped a senior police officer at the entrance.

Reports said it was President PML-N Lawyers Wing Punjab, Siddiq Awan who had a brawl with the NAB’s senior official Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi.

The unruly lawyers and ruling party workers were demanding that they be allowed to attend the hearing of the cases against their leaders.

As Maryam Nawaz entered the court, more lawyer and PML-N supporters managed to enter the courtroom after clashes with security guards.

The lawyers threatened to hold up the hearing until action was taken against the police officials that had allegedly manhandled them outside the court.

They surrounded the bench of judge Muhammad Bashir, who left the courtroom as a result of the chaos, and also got the case record shifted in the wake of any possible harm to it.

The judge decided to end the court proceedings for the day and asked both defendants to leave the courtroom and return for the hearing on October 18.

The hearing was postponed till October 19 without indicting Maryam Nawaz and captain retd. Safdar.

Later, an advocate, Naeem Gujar, filed an application to the judge for an inquiry into the incident. The judge forwarded the application to IG Islamabad, directing him to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz, PML-N leaders Maryam Aurangzeb and Talal Chaudhry condemned the incident, urging the Interior Ministry to carry out investigations. – Samaa
