KARACHI: At least five people, including two children, were killed and nine injured as a three-storey building collapsed in Liaquatabad area of Karachi late on Monday.
The dilapidated building collapsed near Peela School in Liaquatabad No. 9.
Soon after the incident, area people rushed to the scene and retrieved five bodies and at least nine injured from the rubble. Two of the deceased were father and a son.
Rescue teams, heavy contingent of police and Rangers also joined the rescue efforts that are still underway with heavy machinery.
The death toll could climb as rescue workers carefully sifted through the rubble, fearing that more people could be trapped inside the building that was housing nine families.
Deputy Commissioner Central Fariduddin Mustafa also reached the scene to oversee the rescue work.
He said cause of the collapse wasn't immediately known.
Initial reports indicate the age of the building and poor construction could have caused the collapse. - Samaa
