WASHINGTON: The United States on Friday voiced concerns over disappearance of several Pakistani bloggers and social media activists known for their leftist views.
Salman Haider, Ahmed Waqas Goraya, Ahmed Raza Naseer, Samar Abbas and Asim Saeed were abducted by unknown persons last week.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali confirmed the disappearance of four bloggers and said that efforts were being made to ensure their safe return.
Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani also took notice of the issue and directed the Ministry of Interior to submit a report.
Human Rights Watch, United Nations, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and other rights campaigners have called for safe return of the bloggers.
âWell, weâre very concerned by reports that several Pakistani bloggers and activists have been reported missing and weâre going to continue to monitor the situation,â said Mark C. toner, Deputy Spokesperson US State Department, in a media briefing.
â We of course welcome that the interior ministry, I believe, announced that itâs going to investigate the disappearance of one of those individuals, Salman Haider, and we also appreciate the fact that both members â or, rather, members of both houses of parliament have voiced their concern and called for an investigation into all four disappearances,â added Toner.
