MPA salary increases: Has a public interest bill been approved with the same speed?

March 14, 2019

A day earlier, the Punjab Assembly unanimously approved a bill seeking increment in the salaries and compensation of the members of the assembly.

One of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s key policies has been austerity, so it wasn’t surprising that he was not pleased with MPAs taking a pay raise.

He expressed his disappointment over the decision in a tweet saying that “once prosperity returns to Pakistan such a move could be justified, but now, when we do not have resources to provide basic amenities to all our people, this is untenable.”

Amber Shamsi, the host of SAMAA TV’s programme Sawaal, shares figures of Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar’s salary and perks and questions the decision of the assembly to raise the salaries and perks of Buzdar, the Punjab cabinet and MPAs.

The bill was passed within five minutes with a complete consensus, raising salaries and fringe benefits of all assembly members. Shamsi asks whether the assembly passed any bill relating to public interest with the same speed it passed the bill to increase the salaries of MPAs.

“Has Chief Minister Usman Buzdar become so powerful that he can raise his own salary and the salaries of members of the Punjab Assembly without the permission of the prime minister?” asks Shamsi.
