E-Learning: Solution To Our Educational Woes

“Get out of tranquility and step in the practical life. Dedicate your faculties to seek improvement in every field to make the condition of people. It is only then we can be strong enough to counter threats to our nation and defeat our enemies.” Quaid-e Azam

If we start discussing the problems that we face today in the education sector, we might run out of ink, paper, time and space. It is no secret that education and health sectors have been ignored in Pakistan and we are reaping the bitter harvest of this criminal negligence. Problems of access to educational institutes, quality of education being imparted in schools, lack of proper teachers, absenteeism, lack of basic infrastructure, political interference, poor examination system and inequality of opportunity remain endemic.

It is no secret either that there are intense social and economic pressures on our youth especially those hailing from middle and lower middle class families. They are expected to shoulder the financial burdens of their parents at a young age or get married and start families in keeping with our cultural and traditional norms.

Problems and challenges exist in all phases of a life’s journey. The good news is that we are living in an era where we can learn about almost anything in the world — as long as we have the willpower and an internet connection. There’s bound to be a website, a video, an online course or podcast that you can access for free or at a minimal cost. The possibilities are infinite. All you need is a curious mind and the willingness to educate yourself.

With the introduction of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), the most renowned universities of the world have opened their doors for students worldwide. Our youth only has to grab the opportunity and take advantage of what they are offering.

Whether you want to improve your resume, boost your career, or just learn new skills, there is an amazing array of websites where top-notch educational institutes such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton and many others are offering courses for free via the internet. These courses are an excellent solution for people who wish to continue their education while working full time, for stay at home moms and for young people who are forced to give up their education because of financial constraints. They are also an excellent way for retired people to learn a new skill, hobby or business management to start a new life after their retirement.

Online education is usually imparted through a series of lectures. Students can download the videos or audio clips for later use. In most cases, course materials are also provided which include lecture notes, reading materials, assignments etc.

There are many famous websites that partner with top universities and organizations around the world to offer an extremely wide range of subjects. They are a treasure trove of information, knowledge and latest trends in education and professional sectors. From understanding artificial intelligence to building websites to mobile app development, acquiring new skills and gaining fresh knowledge was never this easy and affordable.

And that is not all. If you are an expert in any field, many of these websites offer you a chance to become an instructor and reach a worldwide audience. You just have to pick a course topic, put together a course outline, and decide how much the whole thing will cost by applying online.

I feel everyone in Pakistan from educational institutes to industry and corporate sectors should make use of these websites to improve the education standards, technical knowledge and professional skills of its students, employees and staff.

“When you have got that light of knowledge by means of education and when you have made yourselves strong economically and industrially, then you have got to prepare yourselves for your defense — defense against external aggression and to maintain internal security.” Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
